Exodus 3:14 "And God said unto Moses, I Am That I Am”
What do you know about God?
Have you ever over simplified him?
"Well, God is just Love."
Have you ever projected yourself onto him?
"My God wouldn't do that. It isn't fair."
You aren't alone.
We are all guilty of having a distorted understanding of God.
If we build our understanding of God based on our subjective thoughts or feelings, then the result will be radically different from reality.
It's like trying to describe someone standing behind a one-way window.
You may be able to see a rough silhouette,
but mostly,
you see yourself and your imagination fills in the details.
So, where do we start?
First - God is Unique.
" . . . for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me," Isaiah 46:9
There is simply nothing to which God can be compared because there is nothing like him. His ways and thoughts are beyond ours. His Love is beyond Measure. Do not try to reduce him down to something you can easily wrap your head around.
Second - God is Eternal.
God spoke to Moses from a burning bush and instructed him to return to the land of Egypt to lead God's people out of captivity.
When Moses asked for God's name,
God replied:
"I Am That I Am."
A true and complete answer.
From it we learn another objective truth about God.
He is the eternal God . . .
without beginning
and
without end.
Okay, we've learned a little.
Though if we're honest, it should leave us desiring more details.
So what do you do now?
Do you continue to just stare at the one way mirror and describe what you think you see - the God of your own reflection and imagination . . .
Wouldn't it be better to go to the One True and Reliable source?
The one where God has chosen to reveal himself to his people.
His inspired Holy Word.
If you are ready to grow in your understanding of our Great and Wonderful God,
then Now is the time to start reading his Word.
Really reading it.
Not skimming.
Not just checking a box.
You are exceptionally blessed:
You have easy access to God's Word . . . [This wasn't always so]
You have it in its entirety . . . [Nor this]
You have it in your own language. [Nor this - people have died just for trying to translate the Word of God into their native tongue.]
Don't waste another day.
Let's dig into God's Word with a clear purpose to Learn More about Our Heavenly Father and his Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ.
Today's Readings
Four short passages that focus on God's attributes.
Deuteronomy 32
1 Give ear, O ye heavens,
and
I will speak;
and
hear, O earth,
the words of my mouth.
2
My doctrine shall drop as the rain,
my speech shall distil as the dew,
as the small rain upon the tender herb,
and
as the showers upon the grass:
3
Because I will publish the name of the Lord:
ascribe ye greatness unto our God.
4
He is the Rock,
his work is perfect:
for all his ways are judgment:
a God of truth
and without iniquity,
just
and right
is he.
Daniel Chapter 4
34
And at the end of the days I Nebuchadnezzar lifted up mine eyes unto heaven, and mine understanding returned unto me,
and I blessed the most High,
and I praised and honoured him that liveth for ever,
whose dominion is an everlasting dominion,
and his kingdom is from generation to generation:
35
And all the inhabitants of the earth are reputed as nothing:
and he doeth
according to his will
in the army of heaven,
and
among the inhabitants of the earth:
and
none can stay his hand,
or
say unto him, What doest thou?
Proverbs 6
16
These six things doth the Lord hate:
yea,
seven are an abomination unto him:
17
A proud look,
a lying tongue,
and
hands that shed innocent blood,
18
An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations,
feet that be swift in running to mischief,
19
A false witness that speaketh lies,
and
he that soweth discord among brethren.
1st Timothy 1:17
Now unto
the King
eternal,
immortal,
invisible,
the only wise God,
be honour
and
glory
for ever and ever.
Amen.
