Where do you turn when you are overwhelmed and distressed?
Sometimes we pretend nothing is wrong.
Sometimes we seek escapes from reality in entertainment, alcohol, or drugs.
Sometimes we just shut down.
Where is the Best place to turn?
To the One who can actually do something about it.
Cry out to the Lord.
Call to the One who has promised never to leave or forsake you.
Ask for his intervention in your life and in whatever way is best in his sight.
Ask for help to trust him.
Ask for grace and peace to reign in your heart even if the external situation doesn't change.
He can give you a peace that is beyond human comprehension.
As you read Psalm 28 today, notice how miserable and panicked David sounds as he cries out to the Lord and begs for an answer.
Unto thee will I cry, O Lord my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.
Things are so bad, David fears that if God doesn't answer soon, then he may very well die, or at least he feels that way.
But by the end of the short psalm, David is encouraged, trusting, and praising the One who is his real strength and shield at all times.
The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.
I don't know what you are going through today and I don't have the power to change it, but I do know someone that both knows it all and cares for you.
He hears your cries.
Blessed be the Lord, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications.
So, cry out to Him when you are overwhelmed and distressed.
As the old hymn asks, "Where could I go, but to the Lord?"
Today's Bible Reading
Psalm 28
1 Unto thee will I cry, O Lord my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.
2 Hear the voice of my supplications, when I cry unto thee, when I lift up my hands toward thy holy oracle.
3 Draw me not away with the wicked, and with the workers of iniquity, which speak peace to their neighbours, but mischief is in their hearts.
4 Give them according to their deeds, and according to the wickedness of their endeavours: give them after the work of their hands; render to them their desert.
5 Because they regard not the works of the Lord, nor the operation of his hands, he shall destroy them, and not build them up.
6 Blessed be the Lord, because he hath heard the voice of my supplications.
7 The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.
8 The Lord is their strength, and he is the saving strength of his anointed.
9 Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance: feed them also, and lift them up for ever.
A Prayer for Today
My Heavenly Father,
Lord, I beg for your mercy today.
I'm struggling and I'm discouraged.
I know I'm focusing on the things that are bothering me more than I'm focusing on you.
Help me to see anew your power, wisdom, might, and love.
Your Word tells me that your mercies for me are new every day, and I know that is true.
I know that you can change this situation, if it pleases you,
but if it doesn’t, please you to do so,
then, please give me enough grace and peace to endure it patiently.
I know your loving kindness is from everlasting to everlasting and you are worthy of my trust.
So, help me to trust you now when it is hard.
I pray and ask this in the name of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Amen.
